Most brides treat the trial as a formality — a chance to see themselves done up and feel excited. Then on the morning itself something is off, and there is no time and no choice.
The trial is the decision point. Use it like one. Here is what to ask, and what to check yourself while you are in the chair.
Ask before anything is opened
1. Will you be the person doing my makeup on the day?
Start here, because everything else depends on the answer. Larger setups sometimes run trials with one artist and send another on the morning. That is not necessarily a problem, but you need to know now, and if it is someone else, your trial should be with them.
2. What are you using on my base?
Ask to see the products before they go on your face. You are not auditing the brand so much as checking that the shade was chosen for your skin and not pulled from the middle of the kit. A base one or two shades too light is the single commonest thing that goes wrong, and it is invisible indoors.
3. HD or airbrush, and why for me?
Airbrush gives a lighter, more even finish and lasts well in heat; conventional HD makeup is more buildable and easier to correct mid-day. Neither is simply better. What you want is an artist who gives you a reason tied to your skin and your function, not one who names the costlier option by reflex.
4. How long will this take on the day, and what time will you start?
Get an actual number. Bridal makeup and hair together is rarely under three hours, and the morning schedule has to work backwards from when you need to be dressed, not from when the artist prefers to arrive.
5. What exactly is included?
Hair, draping, dupatta setting, lashes, a touch-up kit to carry, a second look for the reception — each of these is either in the price or it is not, and the time to find out is now. Ask the same question about the trial itself: is the trial charged separately, and is it adjusted against the final booking?
6. What happens if I cry?
Ask it plainly. The answer tells you whether they have thought about the day or only about the photograph. You want to hear something specific about waterproofing the eyes and what the touch-up looks like, not reassurance.
7. Have you worked with my kind of skin before?
Oily, dry, acne-prone, sensitive, mature — each behaves differently over six hours. If you have had a reaction to anything before, say so at the trial and ask for a patch test rather than discovering it on the day.
8. Can I show you references, and will you tell me what will not work?
Bring photographs. The useful reply is not "yes, we can do that" to everything. It is an artist who looks at your face and tells you which parts of the reference suit you and which do not. Enthusiastic agreement with every picture is a warning sign.
9. What do you need from me on the morning?
Clean hair or washed the night before, no facial in the previous forty-eight hours, threading done three days earlier, a front-open outfit to change out of. A good artist volunteers this list without being asked.
Two tests to run yourself
Walk to a window. Salon lighting is designed to be flattering, which is exactly the problem. Step into daylight and look again. If the base is too pale, a grey line along the jaw will be obvious outdoors and invisible at the mirror you were sitting at.
Photograph it, twice. Once with flash, once without, and then again two hours later after you have gone home. Flash reveals white cast from heavy powders; the two-hour photograph reveals whether the base is going to slide, settle into lines or go patchy. Both are things you want to learn in October, not in the middle of your own wedding.
On timing
Book the trial about six weeks before the date. Earlier and your skin may change; later and there is no room to try a second artist if the first one is wrong. The whole value of a trial is the time that sits after it.
And if you leave a trial unsure, that is information. Unsure on the day of the trial becomes unhappy on the day of the wedding. Say so, politely, and try someone else — it is a far smaller problem now than it will be then.
